I have a confession to make re the Kay Francis melodrama Confession. Saw it for at least the second time yesterday afternoon. I always liked it but Jane Bryan's prominence in the first 20 mins. never failed to irk. Who wants to see her when one is anxious to get a gander at Kay? Not only that but this film is very similar to Kay's earlier pic, The House on 56th Street. Both are in the Madame X vein but I was always fonder of 56th Street.

I'm rambling but the point is, Confession is much better than I originally thought. Of course, subtle it ain't. There's an intentional, operatic artificiality to the proceedings. However, once I finally connected with the flick, I was in love.

Watch Kay warble a torch song (Dietrich would be proud), change outfits and emote her heart out. Sure, she's a bit much in one scene with Donald Crisp. Overall, however, a very touching performance.

I adore the five Lead Actress performances that received my vote but wouldn't be disappointed to see Kay doing better.

Confession, Love is News the first movie about how paparazzi ruined famous people life !) and Angel are (with the incomparable The Awful Truth and my favorite Stage Door) the movies I wanted the most to single out for this selection ! A lot of good choices, AGAIN, and some pretty original. I have to vote, I fear to miss the deadline, but I'm going to watch A Damsel in Destress, just for curiosity.

I have checked up a little ... nothing could saved Universal this year and I would probably have tried the same selection as most players ... except, I dunno, maybe for MGM ? I would have try maybe to push The Emperor's Candlesticks ? Could have been an easy vote for the two leads ?

I forgot to say I really like Frances Farmer in The Toast of New-York ! The movie itself was good if previsisable entertainement, but indeed she has a lot of character in her acting (compare to, for exemple, Lane in Those Roaring Twenties to watch a flapid ingenue) and she is so beautiful to watch ... also, what a husky voice !
