Carey fit exactly what the jury would save, not reject. And yet, they did. For some reason, they decided that Frances was worthy of keeping but not Carey.

We also just saw Brendan Fraser beat BAFTA+Globe winner Austin Butler with just a SAG win despite The Whale being weaker and Elvis being a Picture nominee. All cause he had momentum. Carey had the momentum each awards show and they all still said no to her. She was just never winning with that role

This is a hard one. SAG obviously loves Ma Rainey more than AMPAS.
I probably would go with Mulligan for being in a stronger film.

So, being a darling of a group only counts against Viola. Cool!
You're comparing what a whole SAG voting body decided to what literally six people (non-BAFTA members btw) decided. How can you miss this tiny, small detail that casually puts everything in perspective?

I am finding being alive fascinating.

I want to say Carey Mulligan because she was my pick, but I think it was SAG winner Viola Davis.

I thought the past 2 years made it clear that winning SAG means you’re top 2, unless if you’re not nominated for the Oscar. Carey is my fave in this lineup but I can’t get behind her here.

If SAG did everything they could for Viola then they would have thrown The Woman King an extra lifeline with an ensemble nom too (I was so sure it would happen earlier in the year!).

Maybe not, but dismissing an actual industry win as "just a case of SAG loving Viola" is still weird, as if a significant part of the industry loving her that much is a point against her somehow?

Despite dubious membership overlap since the merger, SAG as an overall body can have more in common with AMPAS than people want to believe at times. Chastain, Fraser, Curtis, Yeoh. EEAAO/CODA/Parasite becoming clear favorites after their ensemble wins. The list goes on yet people always say things like "SAG can't go 4/4" or "SAG is meaningless since the merger."

Actors are still a powerful force in both sheer number of voters and their ability to wield influence in campaigning and Hollywood word of mouth.

    Viola 100%!

No, honey, it's me having that on account: it's electric storm who flippantly dismisses an industry award voted by a thousands, yet chalks Carey's BAFTA snub to "eh, it was just 6 people voting". The numbers either matter for both or don't matter for either, but you can't dismiss both Viola's ignoring the numbers, and then also dismiss Carey's snub because of the numbers.

Stop debating and overthinking, Davis was only 4th in the anonymous ballot tally which is of course the most important stat.

This thread also inspired me to revisit the 2021 April thread. What a ride.

this was the most exciting race in years, I could actually envision 3 of these being RUs (I'd say Kirby was most definitely 5th)

Voting for Davis, bacause Mulligan ended up winning 0 industry awards.

It's cute some users are pretending Carey wasn't largely expected to be the SAG winner (she had the most populist film too) only for her to lose there too.

Should have thrown Andra a vote if I knew the results were looking this way.

Sorry but the BAFTA jury had no reason to save McDormand given her status over Mulligan. Davis missing is understandable, 6 other people didn't even want to finally give Washington a nomination the year after lol.

    Viola 100%!
Absolutely btw, the dismissal is so weird. In the end of the day she won something relevant in an unclear race, yet Mulligan couldn't even win anything she was expected to.

Re BAFTA that year, I thought the top two automatically made it in, and the other four were selected by a jury (which reviewed the shortlist of the top fifteen, or twelve, or whatever it was). I had assumed McDormand and Kirby were the top two, so they automatically made it in. Incorrect?
trujilll is dead wrong. I’m right. Jamie Lee Curtis will win major awards, including the Oscar, for Everything Everywhere All at Once. 12/11/2022 —> book it. Confirmed.

That one was in 2021. 2020 was entirely juried.

Remember when Kirby stans tried to argue she wasn’t 5th
