Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927, F.W. Murnau, USA)
City Lights (1931, Charles Chaplin, USA)
Rear Window (1954, Alfred Hitchcock, USA)
Some Like It Hot (1959, Billy Wilder, USA)
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964, Jacques Demy, France)
    Persona (1966, Ingmar Bergman, Sweden)
The Godfather (1972, Francis Ford Coppola, USA)
Cries and Whispers (1972, Ingmar Bergman, Sweden)
Todo Sobre Mi Madre / All about My Mother (1999, Pedro Almodovar, Spain)
Y tu Mama Tambien (2001, Alfonso Cuaron, Mexico)

Would be my ballot. Maybe I'd switch the Hitchcock for Kar Wai or maybe a Kubrick (either Clockwork or EWS).

Visually and aesthetically they are on different ends of the spectrum yet almost equally impactful. It'd be a shame to omit one.

What's his argument? Bergman is overrated or there should only be one film per director?

Supposedly more the bolded part, but I always think if it were two Rivettes being listed, one wouldn't hear a peep from him, aw.

I mean, I can see his argument. But ultimately these lists are personal, so if someone loves two films that just happen to be by the same director, then who cares? List them.

Also really wanted to add an Ang Lee film. My choice would be Life of Pi but there's a case to be made for Brokeback Mountain and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Glad you're all able to pass judgement on a hypothetical that there's no way to test or prove!

It's the principle, regardless of someone having two Bergman, Scorsese, Rohmer, Rivette, whoever.

A mostly strategic one (great movies that need some love [or more love]), in no particular order:
    • Fight Club (Fincher, 1999)
    • Let's Go with Pancho Villa (de Fuentes, 1936)
    • A Hard Day's Night (Lester, 1964)
    • Mad Max: Fury Road (Miller, 2015)
    • Man of Iron (Wajda, 1981)
    • Modern Times (Chaplin, 1936)
    • Pain and Glory (Almodovar, 2019)
    • Shrek (Adamson & Jenson, 2001)
    • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (various, 1937)
    • Stop Making Sense (Demme, 1984)
