Sony? Doubt it, but I'll give Majors an opportunity.

I actually liked that teaser, but no way it doesn't get overshadowed by 'Top Gun: Maverick'.

No Warner Bros movie in contention this year? I don't think they missed it in like decades.

The Lost King is certainly a possibility for this year. Frears + his Philomena team + baity subject matter is certainly a possible british vote winner. Just got dated for October of this year.

I believe WB did miss in 2016 though so they don't have a 100% hit record.

Warner Bros. having The Lost King is so random? Is it in US too?

Yeah I'm not clear on that exactly, I know WB is the uk distributor but it may still be up in the air for the U.S.?

I mean Elvis could be the only non-sequel $100M+ grosser in any sort of contention this year, and Butler is already an early frontrunner for Best Actor. That said, the only expanded Best Picture lineup that WB has missed was 2016, and that year their #1 contender was also a biopic with Tom Hanks. But seriously, Elvis would probably be in a much better position in this category if the first half of this year didn't give arguably the two most crowd-pleasing releases of the decade thus far (EEAAO & Maverick), making Elvis only the #3 contender of the movie commercially released thus far. Granted, Elvis is still a crowd-pleaser itself, with its 94% RT audience score and an IMDb score (7.8) that I think is higher than most of the Picture nominees from the last two years when they were above 40,000 votes. It'll probably be a borderline contender all season (especially if I Wanna Dance Somebody steals its music biopic fever) but WB will probably put all of its usual muscle behind it.

Yeah, two BP nominees from first half of the year (EEAO and Top Gun - and i think they are pretty locked) is already a lot, so there is no room for Elvis

We only had 10 nominees in 3 recent years so far and 2021 doesn't really count due to COVID. In the two normal years with 10 nominees, 2009 and 2010, 4 early releases made it into Picture in both years. Up, District 9, The Hurt Locker and Inglorious Basterds in 2009, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, Toy Story 3 and Winter's Bone in 2010.

I would say that having 3 early releases in a field of 10 wouldn't be strange at all. The problem is that Elvis might not be well-liked enough for a BP nomination, regardless of when it was released.

I have Elvis taking a slot because of the box office results, it being a crowd pleaser and it’s a biopic. I can’t rationalize predicting Butler to make best actor without it. So I’m just going with that for now until we get a better idea of the landscape after fall festivals.

When Butler drags the movie to a SAG Ensemble nom, then we'll know.

Babylon and empire of light are the only two films I have 100% locked in for BP

I mean just from premise alone I feel fairly confident just giving Babylon the overall winner prediction

Avatar, Black Panther and Top Gun as possible BP nominees. The Academy really have no excuse for fucking up the Oscar’s this year but I’m sure they will.
