As for Kristen Stewart, it's pretty obvious she went from the clear frontrunner to a clear passion pick. After losing an easy Golden Globe when there still was the perception she was way ahead of everyone else, the SAG and BAFTA snubs happened, signaling how much people were struggling with her film. And if Julianne Moore hadn't helped afterwards, who knows if she would have pulled through? I think her fall was too big to believe she was anywhere close to the win in the end.
People went from Kristen Stewart to Nicole Kidman to Lady Gaga to Jessica Chastain/Penélope Cruz for their winner predictions. It's very rare to have so many front-runners in the race, but it also means that people were clueless all the way through. All I'm saying I personally don't think we should make bold statements about a category that went through five front runners and even snubbed the most likely contender for the nomination.

Well, there were many twists and turns in that very split race because only one contender hit every major precursor (only to ultimately miss) and the Golden Globe, SAG and BAFTA winners were all different. I was just as lost as everyone else with those wins predictions, but the one thing I didn't do was to go back to Kristen because it was super clear her film was really hurting her chances.

If I remember correctly, Kristen finished third in the poll, so the consensus was Chastain.

The moment Chastain won SAG the race was over. Some just didn't want to see that and kept looking for alternatives. Kidman lost all the buzz by that point because Globes went out first and weren't even televised, they didn't factor much this year. After SAG, of course, BFCA was just an addition, but aw members kept fooling themselves till the last minute and tried to discredit Chastain. Cruz hope-predicting will always remain one of the biggest trying it on this website

I am so grateful she got this nomination, she was fantastic

She was the safest choice between the two actresses who had actually won something (especially since she defeated the Golden Globe winner, whose film had had a bit of a SAG overperformance too). And then, there were the crazy scenarios. The one which dominated the last few days was Penelope winning out of nowhere, thanks to those anonymous ballots.
