Itís literally called supporting actress in a COMEDY series.

SNL competes in the variety series category. Their performers shouldnít be here. Itís really that simple.

It's in Variety Sketch so still comedy. When they had the Individual variety category, sketch performers usually lose out nominations to Late Night talk show or Award shows hosts (and musicians in concert specials!). So they actually belong more competing against comedy acting performances than people hosting with comedic bits in between and musicians.

That’s why they need to not only bring back Variety Performer, but also split that former category into 4 separate ones:

    Regular Variety Sketch Performance
    Guest Variety Sketch Performance
    Talk Show Host
    Variety Special Performance

    Everyone’s happy!

It’s all based on number of submissions though. Would there be enough to justify those four categories?

Iíd say so. Only Talk Show Host would have less than 20 submissions thus just 4 nominees there.

    This.

Some people are struggling to get a simple and fair point here.

I think the opinion for which you're arguing against is a small minority (and it's probably not really what they meant). Just bring back Variety Performer and be done with it. It makes sense for so many reasons. It frees up spots for deserving performers and shows and it also adds an extra category so that the Emmys can attract more stars.
Yes I'm not arguing that they should be placed here (even if they are technically giving comedic performances more than variety performances), and I am 100% on board with what 24Emmy is proposing regarding creating separate categories for different kinds of variety performances. Instead, I've seen comments over the years that say SNL performers shouldn't be here because they're not giving performances worthy of awards, with the same argument about how some people spend entire seasons developing characters, and that they supposedly have it easy because they only do it in 5 minutes. These performances are valuable too, and deserve love - maybe not in this category because they do blur the lines, but there are countless SNL performers that deserve Emmys just as much as anyone else!

I don't think it's likely that we get variety performer categories, so my new plan is to get SNL cancelled. Digging in Lorne Michaels' trash cans for damning intel.

Okay, you are keep going on with the same argument directed to me, yet I've never said that the work they've done are less deserving. I've said it's different to create 5-minute long sketches and build a character from the ground up. The former is a hard task also, but the latter is what the very category was made for. Variety Performers should have their own shining category, that's all.

This post kind of makes me wonder what a dramatic variety series would look like, lol.

This is a very strong category that will definitely have some big snubs. I donít feel comfortable having only one SNL actor and snubbing Strong & Bryant, but I just canít make room for them. The lineup is full of former nominees and buzzy supporting roles in series frontrunners.

That's bold. I think she'd even get in if none else would from her show

I'm sure leaving Borstein out will bite me in the ass, but I just prepared for the worst and stick with Aidy Bryant because it's her finale season + she miraculously got in the two actress categories last year. Won't be surprised if one of the Abbott women fails to make it in, but alas went with a Borstein exclusion in the end.

    8 Goldberg

Don't really know what to do with the SNL performers, they're probably taking two spots (in which case I'd go for McKinnon and Bryant) but Strong is certainly competitive too. I'm a bit afraid Goldberg could miss, but I refuse to believe it because she really offered some great work on Barry this season.

Yes, she is the definition of a great supporting actress in a comedy series. (And Megan Stalter.)

I suspect she is safe for a nomination, but it's always hard to gauge for first season shows.

I can't wait for Kate McKinnon to waste another spot ZzZzZ...
