As long as EEAAO gets nominated in Original Screenplay and gets some other nominations I think it actually stands a very good chance of winning. The category is very friendly to high concept movies that have strong original concepts. Even if Fablemans and Babylon are stronger films overall than EEAAO, it can still beat them.

Definitely the category where it stands the best chance of winning.

really curious to see if Asteroid City is another no1curr for Wes Anderson, or if he'll be back in the Oscar race.

I'm leaning more towards no1curr, but we'll see.

Going by track record/talent, Banshee of Inishirin makes more sense as a prediction atp than Empire of Light. Even Bardo, as Iñárritu won as a screenwriter (in addition to a director twice and producer). Field makes more sense as well.

Mendes hit a home-run as a director with his very first film and then slowly lost favour with the AMPAS.

He made a major awards comeback with his first time as a screenwriter (1917 was arguably more major with the Oscars than Skyfall, but he didn't screenwriter the latter).

I get the Empire predictions to some point, but they do feel a little knee-jerk and "in the moment," as 1917 felt very much like a gimmick and gimmicks aren't easy to repeat (see M. Night Shyamalan).

I agree with the Babylon/Everything/Fabelmans predictions though.

    I'd probably rank them:

    1. Everything (it's about a woman, so it's at a disadvantage with Oscars, but it's accessible; many people in the industry love it; and it's on its way to becoming A24's highest grossing film)
    2. Babylon (nod seems likely, and probably has a better shot at a win than Fabelmans)
    3. Fabelmans (Spielberg films held to a higher bar, so a win will be tough, but a nod seems very likely atp)

    4. Banshee (twice-nominated McDonagh in a seemingly more personal, all-Irish story reunion with two respected character actors)
    5. Bardo (personal story from a much loved filmmaker)

    6. TAR (it's about a woman, so it's at a disadvantage with Oscars)

    7. Empire of Light (about a woman as well (?), with a screenwriter who has been nominated once for a gimmick-film)
