I mean, that film has to serve some purpose.

I think the difference also with Butler as compared to Egerton is that he seems to be backed by Hollywood -- Denzel, Leo, Hanks, GDT, even Villeneuve. It seems like Hollywood is hellbent on making him happen.

Just read that bit on Denzel coaching him. I’m really rooting for this guy. His journey from furniture in Ned’s Declassified to an Oscar winner would be too much to ignore.

It's all about competition guys. Egerton didn't miss because he is 'disliked' or not 'backed by Hollywood'. He simply missed out because it was a super-strong year for this category. Phoenix and Driver were never missing, obviously. DiCaprio was in a Best Picture nominee and one of the biggest films of the year, he was not gonna miss either. Then we had Pryce and Banderas who both were never nominated before and inspired big passion, so Egerton was a casualty of that. Then there was Bale too, a beloved veteran, hitting precursors and also in a BP nominee. On paper, so far, it feels like Butler will have an easier way to sneak in simply because his competition is not as strong.

Agreed. It was a brutally tough year; one of the most competitive in recent memory. And Egerton still came really, really close to making it in. He would have been a safe seat in most years.

Even De Niro missed for a film that got 11 nominations, that year was a bloodbath

So per his Best Actor win at Cannes today, I’d say Song Kang-ho has a real shot at a nomination. And I feel like the critics circuit will be eager to award him.

I haven't seen it, but I've read some comments saying Broker is an ensemble, so Song probably has a better chance at Supporting.

I need a Lead Actor nom for King Song, not settling for Supporting this time around.

Not buying Song at all. Critics are not touching this one which international performers need to crossover and it’s unlikely to factor elsewhere in the race. Probably not even submitted for the country

    BAFTA jury nom at best

I guess Cruz got in for a film that also wasn't submitted but she's a Hollywood star. IA I don't see it unless the film gets enormously more raved at the fall circuit.

Not at all understanding why critics wouldn’t go for the film or at least Song.
