Just so ya'll know the meatier role in The Whale play is Sadie Sink's character. Assuming the film is not much different. I don't see Chau or Morton.
Food for thought
"everything was fine yesterday"
Maybe its a bit of an odd comparison, but Jamie Lee Curtis reminds me a bit of Michael Keaton - a pretty beloved performer that was major in the 1980s and 1990s, and while they were rarely given Oscar-calibre roles, they were considered snubs for having never received a single nomination, despite being very popular actors at their peak. There exists a world where JLC is nominated for A Fish Called Wanda and True Lies, just like there was one for Keaton getting in for Mr. Mom and Multiplicity, but because of genre bias, it kinda didn't work out for them, despite the fact that they were somewhat in the conversation. What changed for Keaton was simple - a more experimental, out-of-the-box piece came along and reminded everyone of what a great actor he was. JLC doesn't have too much of a different trajectory, but she has a good advantage - she's been doing great, reliable work all along.
Of course, Keaton gave a tour-de-force performance (and Yeoh is probably more comparable to him, and she is similarly considered someone who has been snubbed on a few occasions), and I can't comment on the quality of JLC's performance since I haven't seen the film yet, but objectively, she is someone who I do think deserves a career nomination, and whether it comes for this (which most seem down on), or something later on, I think it's pretty fair to assume she's got a good argument in her favour when it comes to a potential awards run. I don't know what kind of person doesn't want someone like JLC, who is indeed a Beloved Veteran, to not get nominated at some point (not necessarily for this performance, but just in general), which would be a wonderful way to recognize a great career. She's not the Razzie bait many people seem to be implying she is, after all![]()

Stephanie Hsu definitely deserves to be in the next poll, but please, for the love of god, stop calling anyone a “lock” so early in the game.
