Atonement is a Cooper film no doubt.

It is indeed. I saw the picture about a year ago and loved it to pieces. My memory went on a nice little holiday. It travels while the rest of me remains in my hometown, a city the father of a friend once described as "the armpit of Ontario".

Isn't 12 Years a Slave the only McQueen movie that has received an Oscar nomination and that movie had the importance factor with many anonymous oscar voters saying they actually didn't love the movie? Saoirse is obviously one of the Oscar faves but I could see this movie doing better at Cannes or Venice than with the Oscar voters to be honest.

You know any of the Small Axe episodes would have been nominated if released as stand alone movies.
ETA: ok maybe not Alex Wheatle, but the rest? Absolutely

Eh, its only Emmy nomination was for cinematography. Steve McQueen is obviously big in the UK but I don't think AMPAS voters having the same affection for him. His movies aren't exactly feel-good ones and have mostly been ignored by the awards bodies in the US outside of 12YAS.

Emmy voters are the most basic. I’m sure AMPAS would have been more welcoming.

I don't think any of the small axe movies would have been able to get any Oscar noms, except maybe Mangrove, with a proper campaign, but even then i'm not convinced (i think it would have been compared to Chicago 7, and i don't think it would have been able to beat that one). Mangrove was also 2 hours, compared to the others that I don't think even make it to 90minutes, they were too short. And frankly, probably too black for AMPAS.

I loved Small Axe but I can’t imagine any of the films getting anything more than a cinematography nom. It’s not really AMPAS material, idk where the notion that if the Emmys are too basic then the Oscars wouldn’t have been too basic for it came from.

Mangrove is the only one I can see being a (weak) player in some categories, but yeah it more than likely wouldn't have happened anywhere lol.

The Academy would never be cool enough to nominate a masterpiece like Lovers Rock.

Definitely not, they often award way more unconventional things than the Oscars would do. Small Axe would've gotten a lone cinematography nomination or something, just like it did at the Emmys.

I see Mangrove as solid contender in Writing, Supporting acting (Wright, Kirby) and maybe Editing, Cinematography or even Picture and Director. Lovers Rock in Cinematography and Red, White and Blue in Lead Actor (Boyega), these at least. With a proper release and campaign of course, which didn’t happen with Emmy. Amazon treated this so bad.

With the right campaigning, Wright would’ve been a top contender for BSA for Mangrove. She might be an antivax, but the girl can act as hell.

Yeah, 2020 is super weak. Critics did love this one.
    Mangrove could be contenders
    - Cinematography
We almost got all first timer in this category, even weak work from Phedon Papamichael also got in.
    - Supporting Actress
If Wright never get controversial about anti-vaccine, she could get in with this
    - Best Screenplay, Best Picture & Best Film Editing
    strong subject
    - Best Director
Director like him & his amazing work for All Small Axe can get passion votes and get in to this category.

The real question is if Amazon Studios would have done a better job if it was eligible for Oscars instead.

Mangrove was one of the best movies of its year. I’d have nominated for BP, BD, BA, BSA (x2 for Kirby and Wright) and screenplay.

    It could’ve been top 5.

Mangrove would have to battle against Chicago 7 tho as the juridical issue movie tho.
