Paul Mescal Basks in the "Aftersun"

Aftersun is the directorial debut of Charlotte Wells, produced by Barry Jenkins. After rave reviews at Cannes, Telluride, and TIFF, it will play NYFF before a presumed release this year. Trailer is coming tomorrow.

If someone who saw it can tell me what the ending means, i'd be grateful.

Been a few months since I saw it, but there's no real puzzle or anything, so don't overthink it... It just has the adult filmmaker/subject recalling her and her dad's last dance, and it cuts into her adult confrontation/embrace of him... Then we see his last camcorder shots of her leaving the vacation cut against her as an adult with her camera in the present, filming her father... I guess it's the film's grand collapse of past and present, emotionally... just the filmmaker's way of acknowledging the filmmaking act as a means of connection/therapy, really.

I do think a weakness of the film is in how it has the adult woman enter into the equation. It feels like that stuff could have been handled more carefully... but then again a lot of the gut punch of the movie for me was that juxtaposition, where you understand that what we were seeing throughout left lasting trauma on the subject.

But, yeah, it's an emotional/experimental ending more than a narrative one (i.e. all that "happens" is that the vacation ends and the adult filmmaker's film is completed). I think it's safe to assume that her dad died or fell out of her life, but there's not really a clear indication of precisely what happened to him as far as I can remember.

It's open to interpretation, but to me it meant that the dad, who was clearly battling with some form of depression, was no longer in adult Sophie's life and probably dead (given the depression, likely by suicide) . A few more details in my review.

This is not going anywhere beyond maybe Gothams or ISA if it’s lucky.

But Meacal might get a BAFTA jury nod.

    Pretty much.

I wanted a lot more out of this movie, and Paul, but he's still a kind soul and great in bed, so it's all good.

Paul Mescal is making very interesting career choices.

But sometimes I wonder if I really think he’s that great of an actor or if I’m letting my attraction cloud my judgement

I was just reminded of his staggering work in Normal People. The start of what I hope is going to be a great career.
