Coppola hopes to continue to go against the grain with his next film, the long-gestating “Megalopolis,” which would mark his first film since 2011’s “Twixt.” He says he is hoping to shoot it in the fall, but notes, “If you choose to make a movie against the grain, it’s harder to get financed but it plays for 50 years.”
It’s been reported that Coppola is planning on investing $120 million of his own money, having sold a portion of his hugely successful wine empire. While little is known about the film’s plot, Coppola will say this: “I’m going to make ‘Megalopolis’ and I tell you that people are going to be scratching their heads saying, ‘Wow, it has so much in it that we didn’t understand at first that we understand now.’ That’s my hope.”

It sounds like he's already justifying possibly middling reviews.

I love that he's going full George Lucas with this (although Lucas didn't have to sell of anything to fund the prequels).

Total creative control by an old master is something I want to see, regardless of how messy it turns out. People think Apocalypse Now is over the top and flawed and it's still a consensus masterpiece by critics/filmmakers, so who cares if Megalopolos is universally loved upon initial release? It's for posterity.

I wonder if this really starts production in the fall. Zendaya is shooting Challengers this summer, and then moving into Dune 2. Cate Blanchett has Disclaimer soon, and then she's filming the Warwick Thornton after.

Coppola mentioned in that VF interview that this would take years, so I doubt it's coming in 2023, in any event. I just hope it happens!

Or it could be a ONE FROM THE HEART, an interesting failure. For whatever merits that film has*, ultimately my opinion on how Coppola blew his fortune and got in debt for decades because of it remains the same: "He died on a hill for that?"

    *=Dope soundtrack for one thing.

What Megalopolis is unlikely to have is a miscast, off-putting lead akin to Frederic Forrest in the earlier film.

As Cricket said, going with this schedule, it's unlikely Cate and Zendaya will be available. The later will have a much bigger role on Dune and the former will already go straight from Disclaimer in Europe to The New Boy in Australia.

Out of everyone on that list I hope he gets Pfeiffer on board the most. Would be fun to see her work with an iconic director again.

I just noticed the article was updated. I wonder what happened. It'd be funny if he passed because he's playing Francis Ford Coppola in that Barry Levinson movie.

I don't know, haven't we been hearing the script is pretty wild? Mess if they lose Isaac, Blanchett and Zendaya, but not Jon Voight.

Elle Fanning was at his Walk of Fame celebration. I know they worked together on a film in 2011. Maybe she could be Zendaya's replacement if she can't do it.

If Oscar can't do it maybe ask Jude Law again.

It's gonna be hard for Fanning to be Forest Whitaker's daughter.
