i think because he's financing it himself, he feels he doesn't have to answer to anyone re: casting Sh*a L*B***f.

‘Megalopolis’ Will Debut Never-Before-Seen Film Technology

The writer/director confirmed that his wide-spanning film will be the first feature shot on the LED volume stage at newly opened Prysm Stages at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. Coppola will be using virtual production through the NEP Virtual Studios company for the film.

Per an official statement, Coppola aims to have “one foot in the past and one in the future,” combining forms of classic filmmaking with the newest production technology. The Prysm Stage is built to accommodate a best-in-class ecosystem for physical production, including practical lighting, grip and camera, integrated into a state-of-the-art virtual production volume. Along with the new technology available to him at Trilith, Coppola plans to use new, never-before-seen techniques to create “Megalopolis.”

There's a listing in the latest edition of Production Weekly, and they're holding casting calls in Atlanta. So it definitely looks like it's happening!

I just keep hoping to come to this thread and see that Jon Voight, Shia LaBeouf and Adam Driver have dropped out.

I’m slightly worried. On one hand, the soundstage artifice of One From The Heart worked beautifully for that material. The artifice of using the Volume, maybe not so much for an epic family drama.

Of course, he was never going to get a Gangs of New York budget to do all this on physical sets, so it’s either this or nothing, unless George Lucas wants to sponsor him.

Yeah, also the budget is massive already if the reported numbers hold true. This sound intriguing though.

Right, but as much money as he has, I don’t think he can afford building all the sets at Cinecitta, for example.

Unless this is purely an aesthetic choice, in which…I’m still worried.

    The budget is apparently $120million.

Coppola's said that he doesn't want the film's future city to be something that is an unlivable dystopia... rather he wants it to look like a place where people would actually choose to live. I could see some combination of virtual and real sets working well for the film, especially since the entire conflict of the film is between classicism and futurism, aesthetically speaking.

Here he is talking about the aesthetic vision for the city.

The mode of production seems to make a lot of sense, given the thematic content.
