Says he's never helmed a major pop-cultural hit but excludes the big pop-cultural hit he's consistently been praised in. OK, sounds logical.

IMDB plot synopsis for this is now up, not sure of its accuracy.

An architect wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster.

Besides the last 4 words, that has been the synopsis for more than a decade, so I guess it's accurate (or it was before some rewritings).

It’s interesting as it really doesn’t match with the supposed leaked script.

I think the script review was posted in 2011, so there's plenty of room for the script to have been revised several times since then. That's not to say all the problematic stuff will be removed - Driver's filmography amply demonstrates that he has no qualms about playing morally reprehensible men.

I hope they lean into the Metropolis vibes - I love that film.

I don't know, but that synopsis about an architect reshaping the city was the only info I have read for years about this project. I don't know if it was accurate, though.

Given that IMDB still has the Amy Schumer Barbie synopsis for Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie I'd say they aren't the most reliable for that info.

Coppola was in Sicily for the Taormina Festival and he spoke a little about Megalopolis. This is an excerpt from an interview with an Italian newspaper (translation mostly by Google):

I always try to do things in my style, but in the end I always find myself making films that I don't know how to do.- the director smiles - It's a trait of my career, just think of works like Apocalypse now. Now with Megalopolis I would like to make a Roman epic with the story of an architect who wants to rebuild a utopian New York City after a devastating disaster ".
And he continues: "I was ready to shoot the film in 2001. Then September 11 happened and I realized that my vision of such a generous and friendly future world was shattered. I could not have made a film that talked about the goodness of the human being, when there was terrorism. So I let it go. Years later, while I was trying to lose a few pounds, I happened to listen to the recordings of that screenplay again and the spark started again ». The protagonist will be Adam Driver "It is a Roman epic set in New York - explains Coppola - Epics have often inspired American cinema and Rome has been an example from which US politics also drew inspiration. In my film there is indeed a decay, the senate is corrupt and things don't work. But then someone comes along to change things. Although it is a story born twenty years ago, I believe it is very current and realistic, thinking about what is happening ".

According to this, Francis is in pre-production already, shooting from Nov-March:

Oscar-winning director Francis Ford Coppola is self-funding a new film “Megalopolis” that is coming to shoot in Georgia at Trilith Studios in Fayetteville later this year.

The production is set to begin in November and run through March 2023. It has begun preproduction.

Others on the cast, according to Hollywood Reporter, include Nathalie Emmanuel, Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne and Jon Voight.

For some resson I can’t see this film working, but at least it might be a flawed yet interesting experiment like Rumble Fish and One From The Heart, though.

The great old Francis Ford Coppola is long-lost in Cambodia.
