Just saw an exhibition of a painter I didn't know, and I'm amazed and in awe.

Poor girl committed suicide in 1999, 11 years after she shook Cuban art in 1988.



Her name was Belkis Ayon, and her work focused an an ancient cult that slaves from Africa brought to Cuba, the "Abakuá", that she, an atheist, represented in terms of structures of power, gender oppression, and later the increasing anguish she felt.

She started doing her giant panels in bright colors, but later she focused on black and white, sometimes with dashes of brown, gold and burgundy.

If there is a spot for me, I'll play too! (it's okay if we're full - I don't know who yet though. Definitely want to do someone associated with Decadentism, since I love what I've seen, and I've been dying to get into it more, so this is a good opportunity)

Also, whenever we do another modern season, can I do Frank Frazetta? I really want to get out of my comfort zone for a bit

If you’re doing Frank Frazetta, maybe I’ll try Cynthia Sheppard - assuming digital artists would be acceptable in a modern season.

You know, screw it - I was going to try and find someone more fancy or acclaimed, but I've decided that I'm just going to go with my gut and play one of my favourite artists - Odilon Redon (I don't believe he's been played already? Let me know if he has). I love his work, so I might as well just risk the polarizing reactions

Dejar Habsy told me that, for personal reasons, he won't be able to play this season. Habsy, I love ya, Rousseau remains saved for you for a future season.

Does anyone know about @KingMaximum? He doesn't seem to have posted in a long while. Maybe we have to play without him too

Has Otto Dix ever been played? I don't recall, but if not, dibs on him for a future season!

He hasn't been played, so he's yours!

That said, it's probably gonna be a full year before the season's theme fits him! Don't want to advance much, but the order I follow is more or less older > almost-recent (impressionism or, as in the current season, turn-of-century) > recent and then back to older. In the upcoming "recent-themes" season he won't fit, and then there's another older and another semi-recent seasons before we go full 20th century again.

No problem! I don't mind waiting - I just wanted to also put it down here, because I remember a while ago I saw his work and thought "He's interesting, I should play him", but when sign-ups happened for a season in which he could play, I forgot about him entirely - so this was more to just remind me of who I was interested in playing but yeah, whenever he's eligible, I'll happily bring more weirdness to Painter Idol

Well, "sort of" contemporary. They don't have to be alive, they only have had to break through after 1949. That is, 1950 until today. Second half of the 20th century and 21st century. What do you say? See you in July?
