So, with the current Painter Idol season about to finish in a few hours, of course I'm already thinking about the next one, which I'm super excited about because it's about an era of painting that's short but fascinating, was unfairly maligned for a while (except for a group that you'll see when I say which era it is), then had a revival and re-appraisal, and nowadays is being explored and considered more seriously, as it deserves.
As you may have noticed already, my idea is going from the past towards the present, and then back to the past, etc., so, after classicism, we go to...
I'll group it under the general name of "TURN OF THE CENTURY", but I'm talking about:
- Post-Impressionism
- Decadentism
- Symbolism
- Art Nouveau
That is, that moment after the first wave of impressionism, in which painters started exploring new directions, and it's a sort of bridge between impressionism and the avant-gard scene that appeared after the first World War. The years are roughly between 1886 (the beginning of post-impressionism) and 1914 (the year in which WWI starts, and is considered the end of an era and the beginning of our contemporary times). I'll admit paintings made after WWI, as long as the painter brokke through before WWI, and kept painting in the same style he used before WWI (which probably led to him being considered passé after 1920). In the finale, no painting made after 1930 will be allowed.
I know, it's a very specific theme, but you'll be surprised just how many amazing, fascinating painters it encompasses. In fact, I'm planning to do at least two seasons devoted to this era (although not consecutive) because there's so much wealth that I can't decide which painter I want to use. I also know it's hard to be cut-and-dry with styles and eras: usually the names of these groups come after the fact, and the painters either don't consider themselves as part of groups and reject the label even when critics and historians assign it, or belong to different groups and their art can be categorized in many styles. For instance, the separation between the pre-Raphaelite painters and the Symbolists is very tenuous, and yet I won't be admitting Pre-Raphaelites because they're a slightly earlier trend. So, if you're in doubt, check with me before choosing a painter.
You have huge names in this era: Cezanne, Gaugin, Seurat, Toulouse-Lautrec, Ensor or Rousseau are here. Van Gogh (post-impressionist) and Klimt (art-nouveau and symbolism) have already been played, so they're not eligible, but they belong to this era too. But I assure you, beyond the huge names there are perhaps even more fascinating painters.
Here are lists that can guide you, BUT DON'T CONSIDER THESE LISTS FINAL: some of those categorizations are iffy and, for instance, I wouldn't allow Wyeth or Matisse, who appear in Wikipedia in the post-impressionist list, because they're later and belong much more to other styles. And some others are missing: for instance, Although Ensor defies categorization, he's probably best put together with the symbolists (also a precursor of Expressionism, like Munch, who is however listed as symbolist by wikipedia...). So, use these as guides, but check with me before choosing one:
POST-IMPRESSIONISM:

SYMBOLISM:

DECADENTISM:

ART NOUVEAU:

So, as you can see, there's A LOT to choose from.
By the way, the season will most likely be right after Easter, beginning on April 18 or 19.
As of now, I have one person who had claimed long ago one painter, and has confirmed to me he wants to participate, so it's his: @Habsburg will be playing Rousseau. Meanwhile, I will be playing Edward Okuń (a Polish Art Nouveau painter).
So, TURN OF THE CENTURY SEASON so far:
1- Habsburg - Henri Rousseau
2- McTeague - Edward Okuń
Who else wants to?

So many great options! Signing with Ivan Milev.
I'm afraid he's a little late for this era! While I'll admit works made after WWI, the artist must have broken through before it, between 1886 and 1914, and Milev was either not born or still in school in that era! He'd fit better with the post WWII avant-garde, I think.
